To Get Out of Pain

One of the goals that you may write when you start Pilates is “to get out of pain.”

Pain is a very broad word used to describe a variety of different unpleasant sensations. Because of this, is it almost impossible to accurately explain in words what pain is. Verbs such as “sharp, stabbing, tearing, burning, aching, throbbing, prickly and dull” are all frequently used, and it would be reasonable to say that our perception of what pain is, will vary from person to person.

Pain is an experience that is quite different from other sensory modalities such as hot, cold and touch. There is a reflex motor response of escape or withdrawal action that is accompanied by other physiological changes, eg, heart rate, blood pressure, respiration). In addition to the physical changes, you may also experience sensations such as anxiety or fear.

Check out this TED Talk, from one of the experts in the field, Lorimer Moseley. He offers a great explanation of Pain, and this can help explain your fear around pain also.

In addition, a helpful resource is the NOI group in South Australia – the Neuro Orthopaedic Institute – who are an independent group of physicians dedicated to quality pain education and manual therapy. Visit their website at www.noigroup.com .

It is our job as Pilates teachers to help you manage your reaction to pain, ie minimise panic, anxiety, tension, faulty breathing patterns and restlessness. WE can help you to relax, practise self-control, breathe and accept. We can also refer you off if you require more assistance.

Sometimes you also just need someone who cares, and who will listen, and take small steps with you.

Let us begin to try to help you. Or someone you may know?
